Underlying immunopathology as a cause of adverse responses to two intravenous anaesthetic agents.

A patient who had shown some evidence of immunological sensitivity underwent several operations under general anaesthesia for otitis media without ill effect. On his second exposure to Althesin, however, he suffered a severe reaction. Facial angioneurotic oedema was accompanied by peripheral vasodilatation and sweating, and C3 conversion was observed in his plasma. Subsequent anaesthetics produ...

Adverse reactions to anaesthetic agents.

Sir,—Even though some small changes in heart rate were shown to be statistically significant, no clinical significance was attached to such changes. The study was primarily done to assess the overall need of anticholinergic premedication in patients undergoing minor surgery and as such drugs were not administered on a weight basis. However, Dr Gilmour's comment has aroused our interest in this ...

Vascular Responses to Anaesthetic Agents* Stewart

ALTHOUGH EFFECTS Of anaesthetic agents on cardiac haemodynamics have been defined 1,'' until recently few data have been available concerning their actions on the peripheral circulation. In this regard, probably the best studied agent is halothane. Among the pertinent observations are decreased hepatic artery resistance in dogs, 3 decreased resistance in the canine hind limb, 4 decreased total ...

Identification and quantitation of hypersensitivity reactions to intravenous anaesthetic agents.

It is not possible to distinguish between direct pharmacological effects and immune-mediated hypersensitivity reactions by clinical observation alone and errors may occur in the absence of laboratory tests. A convenient and simple test is the measurement of plasma complement C3 consumption and conversion in sequential blood samples taken at intervals over the 24 h following an adverse response.
